WGSS Teaching Assistantships

Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Teaching Assistantships

The Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program at UNM offers teaching assistantships and/or graduate assistantships each academic year. WGSS assistantships are open to graduate students in any discipline at the University of New Mexico. Graduate students with research interests in feminist, gender, and sexuality studies are strongly encouraged to apply.

WGSS teaching assistants carry a .25 appointment, which includes a stipend, a tuition waiver of up to 6 credits during the semester of appointment, and the standard health insurance premium coverage provided by UNM for graduate assistants. (Please visit http://grad.unm.edu/funding/assistantships.html for more details on health insurance benefits for graduate assistants).

WGSS teaching assistants are typically responsible for teaching one course each semester, usually a section of GNDR 2110. We offer both online and face to face sections of the course most semester.

To qualify as a WGSS TA, candidates must be students of good standing enrolled in a graduate degree program at UNM and have a demonstrable scholarly interest in feminist, gender, and/or sexuality studies. Though we welcome all applicants, we may prioritize applicants with the following qualifications :

  • Those who have enrolled in the WGSS Transcripted Graduate Certificate program, or who have a demonstrable intention of enrolling in the certificate program at the time of appointment.
  • Completion of WMST 510 and/or WMST 512 with a minimum GPA of 3.5.
  • Those who have not previously received assistantship funding from WGSS. Appointments typically will be capped at two years.
  • Those who have enrolled in or will enroll in the Graduate Teaching Academy offered by the Center for Teaching Excellence (http://grad.unm.edu/resources/graduate-students/gta.html ).
